Yesterday, with some extra time in Koh Samui, we rented motorbikes and tooled around the island. One of our stops (and a principle driving factor in motorbike rental) was this shrine. The Buddha is 12 meters high and sits on a tiny island connected to Samui by a causeway.
We took off our shoes to ascend the stairs, but on our descent noticed that shoes are allowed during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in case of a hot floor.
This picture (to the left) is not recent -- this is part of one of the wats in Bangkok -- but before I had only uploaded a couple of pictures of temples. Temple architecure is one of the most wonderful sights on this trip -- I personally have grown so accustomed to traditional Western (and specifically Christian) sacred architecture that it is a totally novel spiritual experience to be in these buildings.
